Richards Bay is one of the few cities in the country to promote Industrial Tourism. Industries such as Richards Bay Minerals offer tours of their plants and operations, which visitors always find fascinating.

Richards Bay Minerals is recognised as a world leader in sand mining and mineral processing operations. It has 5 mining operations in the Richards Bay area making it the largest mining operation in South Africa.

It produces 25% of the worlds demand for titania slag, zircon, rutile and high purity pig iron.

Its main export product is titania slag, a derivative of ilemite.This used in the production of pigments for paper, plastics and paint. Also derived from ilemite is pig iron wich is used in safety-critical automotive parts such as brake callipers. Zircon is used in the ceramics industry and rutile for pigment and welding rod manufacture.

The Port of Richards Bay handles approximately 1700 ships a year. Handles 80 million tonnes per annum. Thus 55% of South Africa's seaborne cargo - SA's leading port in terms of cargo volume.

This facility has 4 terminals - Coal, Island View Storage, Dry Bulk & a Multi-Purpose terminal - which handles bulk commodities such as granite and steel.
Richards Bay Coal Terminal is the largest export coal terminal in the world. More than 68millions tons of coal are exported through this facility a year. Most of the coal handled by this harbour comes from Mpumalanga and KZN mines.

Richards Bay has an important Aluminium Industry. Bayside Aluminium produces 180 000tons of aluminium per annum. This facility Employs 1000. Part of the Billiton Group - formerly known as Alusaf.

Hillside is South Africa's most important producer of primary aluminium - 500 000 tons a year. Also part of Billiton.
