Mkuze Historical and Cultural AttractionsBattles & SitesGhost Mountain (Tshaneni) Battle Site
On this site in 1884 the Usutu under Dinizulu, aided by
300
mounted
Boers, defeated
the Mandlakazi under Zibhebhu. Hundreds of warriors died
and the
slopes of
Tshaneni were littered with bones for many years. It is
also the
mysterious grave
sites of the old Gasa (Shangaan) kings, whose bodies were
carried
here from
Mozambique for burial. Other Cultural Attractions Ndunakazi Hill, Mkuze Game Reserve
Venetian trade beads dating back to AD1300 have been found
on
Ndunakaze Hill in
the Mkuze Game Reserve. They may have been left there by
Arab slave
traders.
Etshaneni (Ghost Mountain Grave Site)
In 1819 Shaka forced Soshangane of the Gaza family of the
Ndwandwe
tribe to
flee to Mozambique. Soshangane created a chieftainship
there, and
upon the death
of the Shangaan chiefs, their bodies were returned to
Ghost
Mountain
for burial.
The mountain is said by local Zulus to be haunted.<
